Canada's leaky submarines - the facts are stubborn things

Facts are stubborn things.
JOHN ADAMS Sr.
in his successful defence of the British soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre

On Tuesday the head honcho in Canada's military, putty-headed General Ray Henault gave a demonstration of the staff officer stupidity we described in more detail on October 8. Henault told the Commons Defence Committee and the media that Canada cannot do without its fleet of non-seaworthy, leaky, rusted submarines. Henault claimed the submarines did good work guarding Canada's borders and waging the war against drugs. This in the face of the following facts:

  • When NDP defence critic Bill Blakey asked Henault to give one example of the subs having either guarding Canadian sovereignty or catching drug smugglers - Henault couldn't.
  • The submarines cannot travel under the polar ice cap.
  • Canada had the world's third largest navy in World War II, won the Battle of the Atlantic, but possessed not one submarine.
  • The main threat to Canadian sovereignty is the United States.
