Stephen Harper Flunks Geography Test
On February 26, the Eye Opener looked at Stephen ("The Sheriff") Harper. "He is," said the Eye Opener "An almost irresistable alternative to the corrupt Liberals and the Earnscliffe Strategy Group. But Earnscliffe, and the CBC, allege Harper's a religious zealot and a Darwinian capitalist. Is he? Will Conservative zealots and ideologues scuttle the Conservative Party?"

Harper excommunicated from the Christian Taliban

Last May 1 the CBC accused Conservative leader Stephen Harper of being a member of the Christian Taliban. If Harper ever was a member, the Taliban have excommunicated him.

David Krayden, the Head Ayatollah of Concerned Christians Canada, told Calgary Herald readers on Monday that, even before the June 28 election, "We had our reservations. We didn't like the way he sacked Larry Spencer (the gay-bashing Mullah from Missouri and former Alliance MP) ... He chastised MP Rob Merrifield for suggesting women should receive counseling before having an abortion. Last summer, [Harper] told MP Randy White (the 'Abbotsford Dinosaur') go to our June 29 story to see how Randy helped to lose the election )to run for the hills ... We continue to be disappointed. Harper has proven to be a crashing failure as a representative for social conservatives ... He will not win without us. He is advised to remember that."

PCs staging a reverse takeover of the Conservative Alliance? Harper's shadow cabinet

Last week (Jim Prentice - Canada's next prime minister?) and on June 29 (The June 28 election - the Tories lose - the Liberals nearly lose - the Flubs and the Smarts), we said that the Conservative Party must purge itself of its Neanderthal elements. On Thursday, July 22, Stephen Harper excluded some of the party's most obnoxious Neanderthals from his shadow cabinet. On Thursday, Harper appointed to the shadow cabinet, as deputy leader, Peter McKay, former leader of the old Progressive Conservative Party; as social development critic, Peter Van Loan of Toronto, the former PC national president; as native affairs critic, Jim Prentice, former PC second-place leadership candidate together with Alliance moderates Belinda Stronach; Jim Moore; Jim Rajotte; Rahim Jaffer and Rona Ambrose. More significantly, Harper refused to appoint anti-abortionists Cheryl Gallant and Rob Merrifield; B.C. simian antihuman rights activist Randy White and North Okanagan all-around-red-neck Darrel Stinson.

But were the PCs staging a reverse takeover of the old Alliance Party? Not really - only 25% of the shadow cabinet are former Progressive Conservatives. And Harper retained Stockwell ("Alley Oop") Day as his "faith-based" foreign affairs critic. At best, Harper has taken only a half step towards cleaning up his party.

Victory in the air

On Thursday the National Post reported the following projected seats in the June 28 election:
    • Conservatives 117 seats (versus 98 on May 28)
    • Liberals 112 (135 on May 28)
    • Bloc Quebecois 55 seats
    • NDP 24 seats.
Earnscliffe panicked and brought Junior home from the G-8 Summit to memorize his lines for today's and tomorrow's leadership debate. Agriculture minister Bob Speller has printed up stickers to cover the Liberal logo on his election signs. In Calgary South Centre, the Eye Opener resorted to a microscope to read the Liberal logo on Cheeky Julie Turnbull's signs - only 29% of South Centrites support her (versus 53% for Conservative apparatchik Lee Richardson). Former NDP premier, now Liberal, Ujjal Dosanjh will win his seat; Deputy Premier Anne McLellan is, with provincial Tory help, ahead by a hair in Edmonton; Ed Broadbent will win his seat hands down and so will Bantam Jack Layton, and so will famous poor little rich girl, Linda Stronach, and Joe Clark's protege, Scott Brison.

The Sheriff clears the air and cleans house

A week ago, the Western Catholic Reporter quoted Conservative MP Cheryl Gallant as comparing abortion to the TV killing of American Nicholas Berg by AlQuaeda wabbis. Responded Harper, "Cheryl Gallant is a very strong pro-life MP, and this is the rhetoric that the pro-life movement often uses ... It's their business. I don't think it's particularly effective in changing public opinion ... abortion is going to go on one way or the other, and I think it's part of life, rightly or wrongly. I wouldn't say I like abortion, but I think abortion is a reality that is with us."

Last Wednesday, Harper promised to clip the wings of the Canadian Radio Television Commission (the "CRTC") which, for years, has dictated what Canadians can see and hear. The CRTC and the monopolistic Canadian broadcast industry have had an incestuous relationship ever since the CRTC was established. The broadcasters together with author/recipient Margret Atwood are wailing like banshees

.

Clifford Olsen victim, rehabilitation debunker Chuck Cadman was, and is, an extremely popular MP. A gang political thugs stacked Cadman's nomination meeting - he lost his nomination. Cadman ran as an independent and, last Tuesday, Harper expelled him from the Conservative Party. 40 % of the voters of Surrey-North support Cadman versus the NDP's 26%, the Liberal's 18% and the regular Conservative's 12%. Harper also expelled the Christian Taliban's Larry Spencer and scandal scarred former premier, Grant Devine.

Harper compares Winston Churchill to Hollywood War Hero

One day before the 60th Anniversary of D-Day (which he had spent storming the beaches of Culver City, California) 40th U.S. President Ronald Reagan met his maker. While Henry Kissinger recalled, "Da man vas ahn idiot", Bonzo (a chimp with whom Reagan had made his famous masterpiece, "Bedtime with Bonzo") eulogized: "He was a saint among simians." But Holy Hamburger, Canadian opposition leader Stephen Harper ranked Bonzo's buddy right up there with Winston Churchill. Not even Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher would dare so blaspheme. Reagan, it should be remembered never ever fired a gun in anger, never got within 1,000 miles of an angry bullet, ratted on his movie friends and colleagues before the U.S. House Committee on Un-American Activities. Sheriff Harper, how can we protect you from yourself?

Conservative common sense

Last Wednesday Sheriff Stephen Harper spoke to the Toronto Board of Trade. "If you want lower business taxes, you must be willing to stop receiving government subsidies. I won't lower one without the other." Harper specifically mentioned fund guzzling Bombardier as one of his targets. On Thursday, Harper promised to take real steps against real pollution (e.g. smog) and to ignore the Chicken Little Kyoto Accord.

Foot and Mouth, Don Cherry and Peter McKay

Peter McKay may be sidelined out of the Conservative campaign team – for health reasons - foot-and-mouth disease. Last weekend, Peter mused of cooperation with the Separatist Bloc Quebecois. The Earnscliffe Group spin-doctored this into a Conservative willingness to form a Conservative/Block coalition – a gross distortion but one to be expected from the increasingly panicked Earnscliffers. Earlier this month McKay asked Red Neck poster-boy Don Cherry to run as the appointed candidate of unsuspecting Conservatives in an unnamed Ontario constituency. Cherry turned Peter down on monetary grounds. Peter, you don’t need a Red-Neck image in Ontario, don’t worry about the Red-Neck vote - every red-blooded Red-Neck in Canada will support you with or without Don Cherry. But Red-Necks are exactly what moderate Ontario voters are worried about, Stupid.

Coming out Flubbing

Neither Earnscliffe nor Stephen Harper will win this election. The question is which one will flub out enough mistakes to lose it. Yesterday Martin Junior read an Earnscliffe scripted election announcement. In it Earnscliffe accused Conservative leader Stephen Harper of wanting to reduce taxes. Most Canadians, unlike Junior, pay huge taxes and resent them. It was pretty easy for Harper to sucker punch Junior with the “just tax me, I’m Canadian” line. But Harper himself quickly flubbed out “I consult with Brian Mulroney every day.” Canadians detest no one more than they detest Brian (“Sam Slick”) Mulroney.

Sheriff Harper releases the raping, pillaging packers

American meatpackers Cargill and Lakeside completely control Canada’s meat packing industry. Many ranchers and consumers claim that, last year, Cargill and Lakeside skimmed off almost all of a $1.3 billion government aid package intended for BSE plagued ranchers. Last week, hailed before a parliamentary committee for price gouging, Lakeside and Cargill looked and talked like Mafiosi, outright refused to open their books to Canadian MPs. The committee found the packers in Contempt of Parliament. Parliament was about to fine the outlaws $250,000 per day of Contempt. Then Stephen (the Sheriff) Harper stepped in, instructed Conservative members of the committee not to fine the thugs a penny. Harper allowed the interests of American corporations to supersede the interests and sovereignty of the people of Canada (by way of comparison, in February, a court in the State of Alabama fined Lakeside’s parent, Tyson Foods, $1.3 billion for manipulating cattle prices). Sheriff Harper is behaving like the Sheriff of Nottingham.

The Christian Taliban, the CBC and the Earnscliffe Strategy Group

On Saturday, CBC Radio broadcast word of an internal Liberal Party (the Earnscliffe Strategy Group) poll which asked Canadians the following question: “Would you consider supporting a Conservative Party which is overrun by evangelical Christians?” We presume Earnscliffe officials handed the details to the CBC and, by the standards of Canadian journalism, fair enough. But it is not the cake so much as the icing which disturbs the Eye Opener. In the course of their story, CBC radio broadcast the following false assumption masquerading as a fact. “Stephen Harper, is an Evangelical Christian”.

As far as the Eye Opener knows Stephen Harper is not an Evangelical Christian. Mind you, we don’t know what, precisely, an Evangelical Christian is. We have heard by way of rumours (many of which we believe are malicious) that Evangelical Christians would require all senior civil servants to wail and roll on Temple floors all day Sunday, would burn all books of science, would force school children to believe that dinosaurs roamed the earth only a few years ago, would jail anyone who had sex on Sunday. The rumours, malicious as they might be, have the Evangelical Christians believing that the Apocalypse will destroy us all and we can’t do a thing about it, that homosexuals are possessed of the devil, that adulterers should be stoned to death, that women should always obey their men folk, that all infidels should convert to the Lord Jesus Christ or be burned at the stake. It is perhaps a malicious rumor that Evangelical Christians are fighting a dirty war in South America with that agent of Satan, Pope John Paul II. We do know this however:

1. Evangelical Christians exist.
2. Evangelical Christians believe that God has told them that their way is the only way.
3. Evangelical Christians oppose that foundation block of Western civilization, the separation of Church and State.

…Yes, Preston Manning should have kicked this Christian Taliban out of the original Reform Party. Yes, Stockwell Day is an Evangelical Christian. What about Harper? That’s not perfectly clear. What we know about Harper is the following:

  • In November 1996, Harper stated: “I think the Reform party would want to make it clear that it has no position on abortion and this is the personal view of the leader”
  • In Parliament in 2002, Harper joked about Svend Robinson’s (and Bill Graham’s) homosexuality. Svend appearing nude on a Georgia Straight Alliance Calendar occasioned the joke - Harper apologized to Robinson.
  • In the fall of 2003, the Taliban seems to have persuaded Harper to attack federal judges who had supported same-sex marriage.
  • On November 26, 2003, Jimmy Baker look-alike and rabid religious zealot MP, Larry Spencer, declared that homosexuals should be cured or jailed. Next day, Harper expelled Spencer from the Alliance Party.
  • Said journalist (a good one) and Christian Fundamentalist (a fanatic) Ted Byfield on April 12: “Harper, we should realize, has never pretended to be one of us, nor has he ever opposed us. His stance has always been implicit and has never changed.”
  • Last Saturday Harper said: “[my opinions] might not fit the stereotype of ‘social conservative’ which is why an organization like Campaign Life has never endorsed me.”

There is no clear evidence that Harper is a Taliban-like zealot of the kind implied by the CBC. We have grave suspicions that the CBC, having wandered from journalism into propaganda on the global warming and feminism files, has now become hooked on propaganda and has been corrupted by propaganda. If so, what a shame.

Why didn’t Harper deny the allegation outright? Most likely, because he feared that, by denial, he would offend the Conservative Party’s Taliban element (and it is a significant one). Harper should throw that element overboard.

An End to Quaintness in the Maritimes

Two years ago, Stephen (“the Sheriff”) Harper told Maritime Canadians they’d have to pull up their socks, shed their culture of defeat, end their dependency on government grants and seasonal Employment Insurance. Local politicians and Liberal spin doctors wailed. But these last few days Atlantic Canadians in the hundreds have turned out to hear the Sheriff speak. Why? Dependency has forced Maritimers to stand-by while Ottawa’s diplomats allowed foreign fisherman to rape their fishery, dependency has allowed Toronto’s media to patronize Atlantic Canadians (“quaint” is how Torontonians like to think of them) and dependency has allowed Ottawa’s command and control bureaucrats to sap Maritime morale still further. A morale based, no-nonsense Maritimes would generate the type of success Ireland and Iceland have accomplished across the Atlantic.

Conservatives Elect a Sheriff

On Saturday, in Toronto, 55.5% of Conservative delegates elected Stephen (“The Sheriff”) Harper leader of the newly minted Conservative Party of Canada. Harper is young, clean-cut, articulate, self-made unflappable, and, and as far as the Eye Opener knows, socially moderate, but fiscally conservative. Let us hope the Sheriff does not advocate robbing the poor and giving to the rich a la his namesake from Nottingham. Preston Manning should have purged the party of its Christian Taliban elements and Nazi elements – never did. Sam Slick type highbinders and Colonel Putty-Head Tories have called the Progressive Conservative Party home since the days of John A. Macdonald. Harper should get rid of the whole lot of them. Meantime Harper must work and worry at herding the worst menagerie of unruly Tom Cats with whom any serious politician has ever had to deal.
