Finland, a consistent high performer, has the least selective, most comprehensive system in the world. It has no inspectors, no exams before 18 and a national curriculum that is confined to broad outlines interpreted by highly trained teachers at the masters-degree level whose professional standing equates with doctors and lawyers.

In fall 2011, Sebastian Thrun, a research professor at Stanford, and Peter Norvig, the top scientist at Google, teamed up to develop and teach a free, online course on artificial intelligence. Their aim, as Norvig said in an impassioned and compelling TED talk, was to develop a course at least as good as, if not better than, the course they teach together at Stanford. They'd put the result online and make it available to everyone, for free. Over a 160,000 students signed up. About half that many, he explains, participated in some way through to the end. And 20,000 finished the course.

Cariboo-Chilcotin superintendent Diane Wright made $147,536 last year, up six per cent from $139,030 the year before. Richmonds Monica Pamer went from $162,204 in 2011 to $183,542 last year. Thats a 13 per cent jump. To put those salaries into context, B.C. Education Minister Don McRae earned $144,221 in 2011-12. President Barack Obamas education secretary, Arne Duncan, took home $179,700. Neither portfolio received a raise.
