Harper government cover-up of the Mulroney bribe scandal?
by SCOOP, the Eye Opener's Ace Contrarian, Reporter, Opinionator

24-Jan-07 - Last February 17 we warned Prime Minister Harper to discard ex Prime Minister Brian Mulroney "like a dirty shirt". Since then Mulroney has provided a fountain of poor long-term advice - and - Harper has followed it by:
  • Hiring on and keeping Liberal turncoat, Bush/China/multinational loving, totally useless blowhard David Emerson
  • Getting right down and kissing the feet of the the Bush administration (Mulroney and Bush Senior are "dear friends") - by jumping into, as opposed to backing out of, Afghanistan and signing the Softwood Lumber Agreement
  • Not fighting the CO2 catastrophists head on
  • Preferring Mulroney-like spin to Harper-of-yesteryear-like substance

Back in the 90's a German wheeler dealer (he later bribed politicians in German Chancellor Helmut Kohl's government and permanently tarnished Kohl's reputation) and convicted bribe monger, Karlheinz Shreiber, secured a sale of 34 big jets to Air Canada (then owned by the Government of Canada) for European aircraft manufacturer Airbus. Competitor Boeing discovered that Shreiber had bribed a number of high government officials and they suspected that the bribe takers included Mulroney - reported Shreiber and Mulroney to the RCMP. In 1997 Mulroney had the nerve (and we use the term almost in the positive sense) to deny he'd received anything from Shreiber and to go on and sue the Government of Canada for investigating it. The Chretien government backed off, apologized to Mulroney, closed the investigation.

In 2003, the Globe and Mail's William Kaplan proved that Shreiber had, in fact, paid monies over to Mulroney - $300,000 - all in cash. Intimidated by Mulroney's 1997 nervy lawsuit, Chretien did nothing. But Mulroney abandoned his first line of defense - absolute denial - and retreated to his second - the money was paid, he admitted, but covered fees Mulroney earned advising Shreiber about how to open a pizza parlour.

Last February, just after the Tories took over the government, Shreiber, himself, chuckled at the pizza parlour alibi on CBC TV - told the CBC that Mulroney had requested the money because he was (like most politicians) broke.

After Shreiber spilled the beans, the federal Department of Justice stepped in to revoke the settlement of 1997 (which they were entitled to do under Quebec law) and were about to reopen their Mulroney investigation. And Shreiber offered to tell more if the Feds delayed his impending extradition to Germany to face bribery charges there - but - the Department of Justice suddenly lost its enthusiasm for Shreiber's information and closed their Mulroney bribery file. We hope it isn't true - but it could be - that Harper intervened and forced the Justice Department to shelve an investigation that might have landed Mulroney behind bars.
