U.S. President Barak Obama has branded him a corporate welfare bum --- town gossips claim he is a trillionaire --- the Old Timer lives in subsidized housing and spends his days dumpster diving

22-Oct-06 - According to the Associated Press as reported in today's Times Colonist, an anonymous Iraqi "insurgent" claims "the United States is seeking a face saving exodus from Iraq". And Alberto Fernandez, a high-ranking U.S. State Department official admitted on the Al-Jazerra Arab T. V. network that "... there was arrogance and there was stupidity from the United States in Iraq ...". Vietnam all over again. How did the most powerful government on earth blunder into the folly of Iraq, particularly with the folly of Vietnam such a recent memory? Few are wise enough to appreciate, as, on his death bed, did an old veteran of conflict and government, Count Axel Oxenstierna, "with how little wisdom the world is governed." Have a look at Barbara Tuchman's 1984 The March of Folly written in the wake of the Vietnam War. The follies Tuchman described are:

Tuchman also lambastes Louis the Fourteenth of France (France's version of Pierre Trudeau) and Pearl Harbour.

Tuchman blames folly on Donald Rumsfeld-like wooden-headedness; delusion; addiction to power and its trappings; Bush-family-like corruption; the Dick Cheney-like concentration on winning arguments rather than on determining vital interests and facing reality; the arrogance of power ("power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely"). Often the culprits enjoy considerable, often overwhelming, Kyoto Accord-like public support.

Examples of good government and good leadership:

  • Solon who sailed into voluntary 10-year exile once he had accomplished his goals
  • George Washington, the great realist
  • the United States in its handling of Germany and Japan after World War Two.
