Samuel de Champlain -

1535 - "Charted the
St. Lawrence River"

On Saturday the CanWest Global Communications media monopoly, owned by the lawful heirs, executors and assigns of the late Izzy Asper, and the Dominion Institute, paid for by the Canadian taxpayer but under the "ownership" of fund-mongering mystery man Rudyard Griffiths, concocted the Canada Day Quiz. The two have, over the years, jointly and patriotically and profitably agonized over Ordinary Jo(e) Canada's abominable ignorance of her/is history. Question One:

1) In 1535, which famous European explorer charted the St. Lawrence River, with assistance from Native peoples, and claimed the region for France?

Answered Canwest and Mystery Man:

!!!!!Samuel de Champlain!!!!!

According to CanWest and Man of Mystery, Champlain charted the St. Lawrence - before the date of his birth - 1567. The correct answer is Jacques Cartier. We'll excuse CanWest - officially but mythically the trustee and stewart of the public airways, the Aspers have always run CanWest on the philosophy Izzy Asper laid out for his news staff years ago. "Understand," he told them,"that we're in the business of selling soap". We're in no position to excuse Rudyard Griffiths for all anyone knows about him he could have come out of a cathouse in New Orleans - all we know is that the taxpayer pays him millions each year. It's not CanWest's ignorance, not taxpayer money going out to an mysterious ignoramus that bothers The Eye Opener but the banality of their questions. The Champlain question was the only one they asked connected in anyway to French Canada. Nor does it bother us much that they didn't know that Lord Byng (Question 68) was not a Canadian - he was a typical pinheaded, over biting World War I English general who took credit for the capture of Vimy Ridge in 1917 which, in fact captured by a real Canadian, Arthur Curry. Why didn't CanWest and Mystery Man ask how it was that Canadians and Newfoundlanders were driven into a hail of machine gun fire by the dim-witted lord - what does Joe know about the facts of British colonial rule in Canada and Newfoundland. And how Arthur Curry put a stop to it.

Instead of asking Question Seven: True or False: Mt. Mackenzie is the highest mountain in Canada? ... they should have asked Jo why she thinks Canada is such a world-class beautiful country.

Instead of asking Question 18: Name the province that was part of the initial Confederation discussions but decided to opt out of federal union until a later date? ... they should have Joe asked why he thought French Canada came into confederation.

Instead of asking Question 51: What is the name of the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy awards? a) Genies; b) Mulroney's; c) Junos; d) Trudeau's ... they should have asked Jo how, how the likes of Pierre Juneau (the chairman of Canadan's Ministry of Truth or CRTC - a suck-up broadcaster named the Jono awards after Juneau) and Juneau's heirs, executors and assigns can censor what Jo can watch on television when section two of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees Jo and every other Canadian the fundamental freedom of .... expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication.

Instead of asking Question 55: Who wrote the theme song for Johnny Carson's Tonight Show? ... they should have asked Jo why she avoids English Canadian movies.

Instead of the obligatory "Toronto is a world-class city" question (58): Where was Babe Ruth's first professional home run hit? ... they should have asked Joe what he knows about world-class Canadian superathlete Lionel Conacher's career in football, hockey, lacrosse, baseball, boxing, wrestling and politics.

The Aspers and Mr. Mystery end the quiz with this advice to those who scored a D: ... don't despair. There's a starring role for you in the CBC's next hit reality show: Talking to Dumb Canadians.
