Marketing experts seldom make good CEO's of vital transportation companies. Was B.C.'s Premier Gordon Campbell wise to hire David Hahn, a marketing smoothie from a bankrupt company, to run B.C. Ferries, one of the largest ferry systems in the world? Hahn allowed his inventory of ferries servicing the northern route between B.C.'s mainland and the Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands to be limited to only two ships - the Queen of Prince Rupert and the Queen of the North. Recently the ex-marketing go-go-guy removed the Queen of Prince Rupert from service leaving only the Queen of the North capable of plying the Northern route - the life support system of the 6,000 souls residing on the Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlottes. What if something happened to the Queen of the North? Two nights ago the Queen of the North, speeding through narrow inlets at 20 knots, inexplicably ploughed into an island on the route between Prince Rupert and Port Hardy on Vancouver Island. Luckily, only two passengers were killed. Campbell appointed Hahn on May 5, 2005, a year after Covanta Energy, which Hahn, as marketing director, had helped mismanage, went broke. Hahn had no experience in ocean transportation or risk analysis for that matter. Click here to learn more about Hahn.
