The October 2 Daisy Mae and Bessy May Debates
el doctor Che says Harper made cultural mistake in Quebec
Harper went wrong on his campaign in Quebec The idea to cut on cultural matters in Quebec is not only a bad choice, but also a bad political maneuver .We Quebecers are very sensitive on cultural matters and very fragile. This could cost Harper a majority's government. Too bad for him...And maybe for us?

The Eye Opener's reply:
In my view, it's a good thing if he's scuttled his chances of a majority because a Harper majority --- god knows where it would end up --- this laddie is an economist --- like a three-year-old who still believes in Santa Claus --- this Laddie believes that everyone makes economic decisions rationally --- and because he's so sure of himself, he doesn't believe in democracy --- with that type of person in charge --- look to history --- history has some very fearful lessons to teach

The October 2 Daisy Mae and Bessy May Debates
likens debaters to spoiled children
While I enjoyed your article, Chief Crowfoot, I highly disagree with there ever being mandatory debates at election time. For me, the way the debate took place for the upcoming elections in October, sounded more like five spoiled children playing in a sand box&.pointing fingers at each other and not really getting clearly into the issues at hand. Instead of mandatory debates, which is a waste of air time in most cases, just have each political party on separately, giving the straight facts on their platforms. Why do their ideas have to be debated? A list of questions could be made ahead of time on all of the issues and then no nonsense; no slander stand could be given by each politician. Isn't it up to the voter to listen to each platform, without interruption, and then vote on which they find the most appealing to them? That is all that I have to say on this and I appreciate the platform to do so too!!!! A continuous reader of the views from the Old Contrarian

The Eye Opener's reply:
We may be on the same wave-length. What I'm demanding and I am demanding it because I know --- in my time I've seen whole tribes destroyed by petty bickering --- by political posing --- but put someone like Chief Justice Beverley Mclaughlin in charge of the debate. If Jack Layton's supposed to be talking about the changes he wants to make in the economy --- but only rants on about the sins of Stephen Harper --- Chief Mclaughlin would rule him out of order and he'd be forced to stick to the real issue not some message a propaganda staffer thought up for him. I'd say each debater should choose at least one question as long as it wasn't frivolous. And the TV networks would have nothing to do with it --- the debate would take plaxe over the public airwaves and cablewaves --- every TV or radio station or cable network would carry the debate. I doubt you're talking about me when you talk about the "Old Contrarian". I bet you're referring to the Old Timer from Pincher Creek --- not Chief Mclaughlin --- she's not contrary at all --- but that other old guy in the coonskin hat - talk about a Contrary Piece of Business --- be careful of him is all I can say …

Stephen Harper - anal and out of his element
believes voters should look to policies not personalities
Sometimes slow and steady wins the race&. What do you have against anal personalities? With the information you have gleaned yourself from this article, you may be a little anal yourself. If you think this article will swing the undecided's as well, maybe it will, but now I am more confused than ever!! Ha Ha Ha Politics are a funny thing aren't they? One shouldn't vote on the personality of the person, but on what platform you like. I find that each party holds something for me so maybe they should form a party that is non-partisan .. working together sharing all of their ideas and going from there. Could that ever be that there are maybe only 2 parties, or three at the most? I still like Elizabeth May's platform .. It could be added to though in some things. Too bad that she doesn't have the money to get her word out¬ like the good old boys I think that a certain amount of money, the same, should be given to each party. They could not spend anymore than given and it would be a fairer system. We are losing a lot of good people because of the finances. Agree?????

The Eye Opener's reply:
I've been off the bottle for 10 days --- but if ever I thought of myself as anal, I'd be back on it before you could say "George Washington". Speaking of whom --- George Washington hated political parties -- you've hit the nail on the head --- I'm doubly negative on putting political party above personality. I most heartily disagree that one should not vote on personality. Churchill and Chamberlain belonged to the same party --- so do Michael Igantieff and Stephane Dion. In my view, there should be no political advertising --- just a series of properly run debates --- the kind Chief Crowfoot described last week.

Stephen Harper - anal and out of his element
Jack Lamarsh says Harper only leader with a scintilla of knowledge and understanding of the role of economic balance in this race
I disagree with your "anal" analysis of PM Stephen Harper. He is the only leader with a scintilla of knowledge and understanding of the role of economic balance in this race. Stephane Dion should stick to his classroom where he can speculate all he likes about 30-day plans which will magically fix all that is (ostensibly) wrong with the Canadian economy Jack Layton sounds like a replay of Tommy Douglas in 1944 where he blames everything on the same old messed-up traditional parties. Give him enough tax dollars and he will make everyone rabidly happy and secure. Elizabeth May angers me most of all. Without a hope in hell of ever being able to influence anything or anybody in the political sphere, she lets her mouth demolish her mind and hopes she can bluff her way to making sense. She does not succeed. So what are we to make of all this? The Canadian economy is not suffering at this time. Our unemployment rate is the best it has been for years. Our fiscal accounts are in balance. Our trade surplus is firm. We are competing nicely in the new World order of trade. I say we are in no need of change in Ottawa. In fact we need more of the same. Count me solid Tory blue on Tuesday.

The Eye Opener's reply:
if Stephen Harper knows what's wrong with the economy, he's the only member of humankind who does. Jack, Peter Newman is a friend of yours. You may well have read what he wrote in the Globe and Mail yesterday morning --- A time when the gods changed. Peter Newman is a fine writer. Here's a man who can see the forest for the trees - but he sees nothing but smoke --- I can't think of anything with any more perspective than Newman's comments in the Globe. Peter Newman's old enough to have seen the end of the Great Depression of the 30s and Hitler (by the skin of his teeth Newman escaped Czechoslovakia in 1939) and Newman saw an anal little man with an umbrella - Neville Chamberlain, a fine businessman who thought he knew and understood human nature -- who was totally out of his element --- and how it took a man of intuition --- Winston Churchill --- to save us. What I should have added earlier is that neither Stephane Dion or Jack Layton can help either. What I hope is this. For whatever reason that Stephen Harper called an election. Whether he was trying to avoid parliamentary committees or --- actually foresaw economic trouble on the horizon (even an economist might have foreseen that) or --- thought he could destroy the Liberal Party and set up a conservative, North American neocom redoubt in English Canada --- whyever he did it --- he's a victim of the Law of Unintended Consequences. I hope he'll win a minority government --- that will be the end of Stephanie Dion --- in a word Dion makes Inspector Clouseau look good. But then, it is my hope that Michael Ignatieff will quickly take over the Liberal Party and will soon become Prime Minister. Ignatieff has potential --- he is intuitive --- he is a leader --- he hasn't the answer to the storm in the economy -- no one has -- but he knows he hasn't the answer --- he'll admit, just as Roosevelt did in 1933 -- that he has to fly by the seat of his pants --- which Harper, the anal control freak, would never do. And as for times being good --- on the surface. On the surface --- times were probably good too in November 1929, the month following the Great Crash.

It’s a good thing you didn’t slam Elizabeth May. I really like her and the platform that she has to offer. She just needs more publicity, so if and when I get around to it I may have to find out about the Green Party in Saskatoon. She doesn’t sound like a power or greedy person at all - just good old common sense You didn’t really get into any of the funny down home ( wink, wink) humour for old Joe though did ya? China 'harvesting' organs from living human beings
adding name to petition
After reading the article in the Calgary Eye opener on the harvesting of organs from live prisoners, I am adding my name to the petition to Boycott the Beiijing Summer Olympics. As a concerned citizen from our great country of Canada I hope that something can be done to stop this practice from going on , and if boycotting the games would help....I am for it also. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am a great supporter of yours.

Don't boycott China, boycott China's Olympics
asks - Are they harvesting organs from live prisoners?
You talked of harvesting organs from the dead in China, what about harvesting organs from "live" prisoners. One can be sympathetic to the plight of ailing Canadians (and others across the world ) who are on a wait list for years to obtain an organ, but turning a blind eye as to how these are obtained (for instance from Falun Gong prisoners ). According to today's (Friday, May 18, 2007) Saskatoon Star Phoenix, former Liberal MP David Kilgour and Winnipeg human rights lawyer David Matas have investigated and have reported that it is clear Fahun Gong members are being targeted over other ethnic groups and religions, as part of a campaign to villianize their spiritual practices since they fell out of favor with the Government in 2000 and organs from live Fahun Gong members are being harvested. Websites market transplants in China in five different languages and in some cases guarantee availability of a matching organ within two weeks. Would this not be another reason to boycott China? Isn't this a wake-up call to all Canadians to sign their donor cards so the sick aren't forced to make such desperate choices? If more organs were available people would not need to obtain transplants by becoming organ tourists. Unfortunatley people don't think beyond their own needs, and don't really care how or what is done to others in order for them to get an organ. Where has their sense of humanity gone?

The Eye Opener's reply:
If this is true, the Chinese are out of control. The Eye Opener will investigate immediately.

Anyone with a brain in their heads should certainly boycott the Bejiing Summer Olympics if that is what it takes for them to "lose face" I also think that we, as human beings should not allow, nor tolerate the conditions that go on in China. Whether or not they lose face if Countries boycotted their exports, time might prove that to be a good thing too. Lets stop the greed that runs rampant in this great world of ours and start to be once again, decent minded citizens who care about what happens in other countries to the people living with those conditions. Geoff Wood says China miracle wouldn't be possible without Mao
As far as thoughts on Cuba are concerned, I must say I've long had a hankering to go down there to have a look at it ( before it all starts to change when Castro dies and Hillary gets into the White House). Old Havana, and all those old cars - not to mention the ladies. On Cuba's situation, well somewhere in-between as you say. Castro would have done quite a bit better ( although not great - short on resources) without that embargo in place. Not crazy about the socialism route but there's an argument for it ( for awhile) to kickstart Latin America after the background they've had. Get the people educated & involved - economic growth ought to come ( I've got China in mind - wouldn't have been posible there without what Mao did). I could talk about Chavez & Venezuela too - but we'll leave that till next time.

Better get off the soap box. Careful with the Easter celebrations at the Long Bar.

The Miramichi Kid wants biting criticism published - NOW
In my youth (many, many decades ago) I subscribed to Science and Mechanics, Popular Mechanics, Mechanix Illustrated, and Popular Science. In every case I read all editions thoroughly from cover-to-cover and eventually chose not to re-subscribe because the magazines' eventual changes-of-editor brought changes-of-direction and every one of the magazines moved from "How To ..."?-to- "This is What's New ..."? If I'd wanted to know just "What's New" I'd have subscribed to the US Patent Office listings. The?first copy of my new Popular Mechanics subscription arrived today, and I've just finished its first reading. It might interest you to know that one of Popular Mechanic's sections that most-interests me is called "Letters. What do you think?"?I suspect that "Letters ..." interests me because (1) the writers actually have read the magazine's articles carefully enough to form an opinion, (2) the writers' thought-out opinions tend to make me think more than the original articles did, and (3) they serve to keep the editors in line by screaming outrage whenever what is in print starts to sound like Bush-esque propaganda!? One can only hope that your reporter(s) are able to appreciate this subscriber's grumpy-old-man tongue-in-cheek comments as (1) proof that someone out here is reading your newsletter's articles with enough concentration/consideration/comprehension to be able to critique them, and (2) being good enough to put in print and therefore qualify me for 20% of your profits! Or does one have to be in agreement with the Eye Opener's opinions to be printed??I suppose you could always refuse to renew my subscription ...

The Miramichi Kid complains of short hair kudos
This is a complaint from Miramichi, New Brunswick, regarding your most recent edition. How many people in the entire world " ... remember the World War II British," what are the names of the two or three antediluvian fogies who think " Cuban women are the world's most stylish," and in what category are they most stylish? Calligraphy? Paddling to Florida? This reader has always questioned the statements of religious spokespersons like Jesse Jackson and the Pope---as well as those of all self-appointed "experts" (especially those in the media)---because those folks assume their position gives them credibility, and their babblings rarely have any substantiation or validity. Following my lifelong beliefs and personal style, I wish to express my vehement objection to your narrow-minded reporter's antiquated opinions such as: "Every Cuban male has a short neat haircut - none have heavy Mediterranean-style stubbles - all are neat, spiffy dressers." What an insult to the poor Cuban males who don't know any better. Everybody who is anybody knows that only the dated and insecure (including this writer's phony maternal grandmother) believe that having the same hairstyle as everyone else, showering and shaving twice a day, and wearing the same boring penguin costumes every day makes the MAN. In the western world Albert Einstein, David Suzuki, Bill Gates, Peewee Herman, and millions of other immensely successful/influential people have done well without playing the "look-and-dress-like-me" game of the wannabees. And of course the rest of the world has been too busy with its own fashions (turbans, dreadlocks, Afros, parkas, coolie hats, robes, suicide belts, burkas, etc.) to play this game. And "... the Brits survived by becoming grimier and greyer." What a joke! How the hell else should they look after that little German runt---always with a short neat haircut, always well-shaved, and always fashionably-attired in uniform---dumped hundreds of bombs on them day-after-day-after-day? In parting (to go snow-shoeing before yesterday's snow melts away), if it's so damed good in Cuba, why are so many Cubans willing to risk almost-certain-death paddling their way out of there? Oh, happy Easter.

David Ball copy to go to National Stewardship Foundation
I will also look for "Bubble Man", as I am a voracious reader. Licia Corbella (Calgary Sun editor) is a fan of my dad's and she had heard about the death threats he has received. She is also aware of the amount of effort he has put forth for his cause, which has put strain on him physically. Sadly, my dad has received very little in the way of financial compensation and is constantly paying out his own pocket. So much for being in "industry's pocket". He has paid with his health and wealth. I was listening to CBC 1 today and heard the show about the "massive migration of man" that will occur due to rising sea levels and global warming. I was not aware that comedy an integral part of daytime programming at the CBC. My wife would not let me watch "Global Warning" week on Discovery channel, as my doctor says I should not let my blood boil too often. It's quite alright, as I find Jay Ingram to be the journalistic equivalent of a cloud of black flies (painfully annoying).

You have my permission to add the letter to the Eye Opener. I will be sending the letters to a fellow named Tom Harris in Ottawa, who is the media watchdog for the National Stewardship Foundation. He searches out anything to do with global warming in the media to keep dad up to date with what all are doing and saying.

David Ball stands up for his father in the Calgary Sun
Professor Tim Ball's son, David, wrote to the Calgary Sun recently in support of his father and sent us a copy of his letter:

My name is David Ball and I am Dr. Tim Ball's eldest son. I know you are familiar with my father and his work, but I felt it important that you know more about him than that. Obviously I am going to be biased on this subject, but it is important that the world knows these things about this man. People have accused my father of being in "Big Oils" pocket. Nothing could be further from the truth. To give you an idea of the kind of principles my father has, he taught a course for seniors only called Contemporary World Issues. He refused to charge any money for the course for fear of being perceived of "fleecing" the elderly. All my life I have watched my father stand up for what was right, to his own detriment. His pursuit of the truth has been relentless and no amount of money could ever sway him from that path. Both my parents have been successful in their respective fields, despite having careers that have given back to society (teaching and nursing).
My father has studied the climate for as long as I can remember, and has also infused in me an enthusiasm for all the sciences. I have not been shown any evidence from the Gore/Suzuki side of the argument, other than their climate models( computer generated ), which cannot even remotely reproduce the world's climate. Their only argument against my father seems to be to claim that he is a shill for industry. As Rex Murphy stated, that is a the weakest of arguments!
It pains me deeply to hear these people talk this way about a man who has stood for the truth and what is right. Money is certainly not a motivation as my parents live very humbly and also more eco-friendly than anyone I know. My brother asked a very good question after this years Oscar's. "How many of those people in attendance do you think rode their bike's there that night?"
I have 2 children and am very concerned about the future for their sake. I am also a positivist and know from studying history that this is the greatest and most comfortable age that mankind has ever known. Look at where we have come from and you will see that the future will be bright, as today is brighter than yesterday. Admittedly, there are many atrocities still going on in the world, and we have a LONG way to go before all can be happy and healthy and productive, but I think positively. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns,....…

Regards,
David C Ball

The Sun's response:

Your dad's views have neither been good for his health or his wealth

The Eye Opener's reply:
We think that the letter is admirable and demonstrates the sad state that this matter has come to. I'm just reading a book about the stock market bubble of the late 90's/early 21st Century - "Bubble Man" - see www.amazon.ca/Bubble-Man-Peter-Hartcher/dp/0393062252/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/701-5804569-7685165?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175619819&sr=8-1. The big brokerage firms used similar tactics on their so-called independent analysts as the CO2 fanatics are using on today's climate scientists. Most humans, unfortunately, are populated with a surplus of herd/lemming/ flight-not-fight genes and a deficiency of common-sense. It's just human nature, I guess, but human beings would long since have disappeared from the Planet Earth (with or without global warming) if there weren't a few odd persons out who stood up and fought for their beliefs.

I didn't quite understand what the Sun meant about your father's health.

David Ball questions Suzuki's motivation
Chris McMurtry has made the statement that David Suzuki has opened the dialogue on the environment issue. I can say first hand that the opposite is true. He has not answered any poignant question on the subject and has made it virtually impossible for anyone with scientific credentials (ie. Dr.Richard Lindzen of MIT, Dr. Tim Ball Phd ) in the atmospheric sciences field ( which Suzuki does not have) to voice an opinion anywhere in the media. In fact he has people on staff whose job it is to stifle anyone with opposing evidence or views!!! If politics are not on Suzuki's agenda, then what was he doing standing behind the new environment minister as he was being sworn in? And what happened to Rona Ambrose? My guess is that she did not agree with Dr. Suzuki. The science has not been proven. No science ever is. Even Einstein is still being tested!!!! I do agree that we have to clean up our dishes, so we should focus on issues that we have control over ( ie. water, food, diseases). Suzuki and Gore claim to want to save humanity, but all I can see is their hunger for power. Neither Gore nor Suzuki live "eco-friendly", but I can tell you that Dr. Ball and his wife live more "eco-friendly" than anyone I know. I should know, as Dr. Ball is my father, .... David Ball

David Ball worries Gore and Branson will bring on next ice age
I am very concerned about Al Gore and Richard Branson putting forth the challenge to come up with a way to cool the atmosphere. We have very little understanding of the mechanisms of the climate. The climate models are not even close to predicting the real climate due to the amount of variables, known and unknown. The volcano Pinatubo in the Philippines ( a small eruption comparatively) caused 2 summers of relatively cool temperatures and a lot of rain. If these guys succeed in cooling the planet and we have a sizeable eruption (or any naturally occurring event) , they could likely bring about an ice age themselves. The phrase "they know not what they do" comes to mind. We must be diligent in our efforts to preserve "Spaceship Earth", but we must not panic. My hope is that clearer heads will prevail.

Recommended reading for everyone interested in the climate, is Micheal Chricton's novel "State of Fear". It is a work of fiction, except for the science involved. Chricton is known for accuracy and research in all his novels, but he is extremely thorough in this book. I found the footnotes and references as interesting as the book itself. He backs up all his perspectives in the book with data that is available to anyone, who is willing to look. Dear Doubter, Have your faith AND trust the science: human induced global warming is here and it's not going away unless we do something about it! Enjoy your day. Cheers Joel Duncan

Reply: Science involves proof. We asked Dr. Weaver whether or not the two hypothesis:

  1. As the amount of CO2 emitted into its atmosphere increases, the Earth's climate becomes substantially warmer.
  2. Human beings are pouring so much CO2 into the Earth's atmosphere that the earth's climate is becoming substantially warmer.
and, if so, where and by whom. We've not got Dr. Weaver's answer. Perhaps you could enlighten us.

Eye Opener will stage scientific debate on global warming
David Ball describes mistreatment by spin doctor
Just wanted to applaud you for having the guts to have a real debate on the global warming subject. I am Dr. Tim Ball's eldest son, and can tell you that my father's pursuit is, and always was the truth. He is a man of honor and principle, and would never accept money from "Big Oil" to influence his perspective. You would say I am biased because he is my father, and that would be quite true, however, it is undeniable that he instilled these values in me. The "Suzukis'" of the world have never been able to show any scientific proof of their viewpoint to me or to anyone that I know. This is troubling to me. Einstein's theory of relativity is still being tested, so how can Weaver say that global warming has been proven? That the debate is over? Where has common sense gone? Where has the scientific method gone? What of equal time? Even Suzuki should know better, because his field of study (genetics) requires data and proof for any theories advanced, and is subject to thorough retesting before any acceptance. I have a 2 year old and another on the way, so the future is very important to me. My father is not a "pollutist" as he has been called. In fact, he and my mother are the most environmentally conscious people I know. Once again, "HUZZAH" for not just believing what you have been told. Contact me if you would like to, or have the time. I happen to live and work in Calgary. Thank you Regards, David Ball

Doug Watson predicts ice age
The best scientific information I have seen on this subject indicates that Global Warming is merely a prelude to the next ice age - just as global warming was a prelude to the last ice age. It will occur with or without man. The questions are, will it occur more quickly under the influence of man, and if so, will it occur significantly more quickly? Doug Watson
