Is owning a Canadian slave illegal

"In the U.S., I worked my guts out but I graduated from Harvard Law School and went on to fame and fortune. In Canada, all I could have become was a railway porter."
Paul Robeson, 1946

John Ware --- Born a slave. After Lincoln freed the slaves, John moved to Canada and became a cowboy --- his funeral was the largest in Calgary's history

Hey boy, sure must be good to be livin' in Canada where there's no such thing as racism.

Scato de toros, Massa Pete. There's lots of racism North of the 49th --- always has been. In 1910, the greatest boxer of all time, heavyweight champion Jack Johnson arrived in Victoria and tried to book in at the Empress Hotel. The Empress wouldn't let him on the premises. No room at the inn for blacks.

You're not being fair to the company I used to run, the Canadian Pacific Railway --- the CPR operated the Empress in those days. Every other hotel in Victoria turned Johnson down too. Of course, it didn't help that Johnson, the son of slaves (John you were born a slave --- slavery colors your fairness) arrived in Victoria with not one but, whadda ya' know, three white women in tow. "I love women," said he. "And sometimes I love more than one woman at the same time and often I love a white woman --- and often I love more than one white woman at the same time --- that's just the way I am --- I may be going to hell for adulteratin' and mixin' the races but one thing I am --- I'm a man." Scandalous --- how amoral and contrary to the laws of the almighty can a man get --- oh, the humanity!!!

You should try being another man's property, your Lordship. Jack was the greatest heavy-weight champion of all time --- and quite a "sporting gent" to boot ... didn't give a damn what anybody thought of him. One time he was speeding through South Carolina, where I used to be chattel property, and an over-stuffed southern sheriff flagged him down. "Boy --- I'm stoppin' you for speedin' --- and I'm goin' throw you in jail --- cause the fine's $50 (that was 1909 and $50 then was about $1,350 now) and no black man has ever seen or ever will see $50." So old Jack pulls out a $100 bill --- "Got change." The sheriff didn't. "It's OK," says Jack. "Keep the change ... I'm headin' for Florida and I'll be back in a week." Jack was smart enough and had enough of the gambler in him to know that money'd move the the sheriff more than hatred and racism. And fear of bein' beaten to a pulp'd move him even further. If Jack had been the blacks' leader in those days ... we'd have been desegregated in 1910. But we let Uncle Toms like Booker T. Washington lead us. As it was, it wasn't till 1954 that Brown v. Board of Education even allowed our kids to go to white schools. But, in Nova Scotia, even in the 60s blacks couldn't sit with whites in movie theatres.

PBS is re broadcasting Ken Burns's documentary about Jack Johnson, Unforgivable Blackness. Well worth seein'. And even an outright racist like Jim Jeffries --- who was the top boxer of his day --second, that is, only to Jack Johnson --- - they called him the "strongest man ever to enter the ring" --- even, Jeffries, after Jack beat the livin' daylights out of him, admitted that he never ever could have beat Jack. Jack was by far the best fighter he ever met. Here's Jack laying into Jeffries:

Peter McGonigle --- you old hypocrite --- you're the head pooh-bah at the Orange Lodge --- the Orange Lodge is based on hate, hate and nothing but hate --- you hate the Métis --- you hate Catholics --- you hate natives --- you hate "foreigners" --- you pretty well hate anyone who doesn't come from England or North Ireland. You fought against letting peasants from eastern Europe, the "men in the sheepskin coats" settle in Western Canada and --- if you'd had your way there'd be no Western Canada.

McGonigle, I'm sorry you didn't succeed --- because, if the Orange Lodge had settled Western Canada with a bunch of useless Cockneys from London, England --- the Cockneys 'd have starved to death or high-tailed it back to the land of the Great White Mother. Gabriel and I would still own the west --- not only in law --- also in fact.

What kind of a patriots are you two??? John A. Macdonald, the very founder of our country was an Orangeman. So was every Father of Confederation who wasn't a Dogan, and at least three other prime ministers. Every dignitary worth his salt in Toronto the Good in the old days was an Orangeman .... .

You're not only bigoted McGonigle, you're putty-headed --- you've made my argument for me.

And there was another John --- a future Prime Minister of Canada --- and Orangeman --- a number of Orangemen brought the Ku Klux Klan up to Canada ... Sure there were no blacks in Western Canada so the Klan settled on Catholics and Jews and Métis and natives --- if didn't matter who the Klan and the Orangemen hated as long as there was someone to hate who wasn't an Aryan --- the Klansman even had it in for Germans. One night in Holdfast, Saskatchewan, led by a tall gent with a deep voice called the Imperial Wizard, a bunch of Klansmen all dolled up in hoods and bed sheets burned a cross in front of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church. The lads from the Regina St. Patrick's Hall defrocked the Wizard of his hood --- guess who the Wizard was --- no other than future Canadian prime minister John Diefenbaker .

And then there was Canada's first "Canadian" governor general, Vincent Massey. Massey loved sucking up to the English ruling classes --- the ones he cavorted with hated Jews so, like an organ grinder's monkey, Massey aped his betters --- Massey stopped Jewish refugees from coming to Canada in 1939 --- had 'em shipped back to Germany --- eventually many ended up in the gas chambers. Even after World War II, even when he knew about the gas chambers, Massey stopped Jews from coming to Canada. And he wasn't alone --- government owned Trans-Canada Airlines hired a much decorated Spitfire pilot but, when they discovered he was black, they hustled him out the back door. Big-league American baseball let Jackie Robinson play in 1947 in defiance of the Klan and the wannabe slaveholders of Dixie ... but the National Hockey league didn't let blacks play hockey until 1958 when Willie O'Ree, "the Jackie Robinson of Ice Hockey", got to play two games --- it goes on and on --- the Japanese, the Chinese, the Sikhs .... French Canadians were fourth-class citizens in Ontario --- the myth of Canadian tolerance is total mucho scato de toros. Look at this 2008 video from the entrance to a Calgary nightclub:
